The grant, entitled REEF Project,
involves the class in a local science initiative, the Coral Transplant
Project, as volunteer monitors of transplanted coral sites. Students travel
to Trunk Bay monthly to monitor the fast-growing coral species transplanted
to that bay by collecting data on the health of the transplanted coral
colonies and photographing them with digital cameras in underwater casings.

The Coral Transplant Project is administered by the Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park (Click onto "Canon Coral Project Home Page" for general information about the project. Then click onto "Volunteers play a key role in the project" in the text to find out more about volunteers.) |
In addition to their work as volunteer monitors, their
participation in the REEF Project supports their activity in a variety
of academic and extracurricular experiences.
The students' participation in the REEF Project is highlighted here.
